History

Founded in 1917 in San Sebastián by Spanish designer Cristóbal Balenciaga, then moved to Paris in 1937, the house quickly established itself as one of the greatest Haute Couture houses of the 20th century. Cristóbal was considered by his peers — including Christian Dior himself — as "the master of us all": an architect of clothing, obsessive about cut and material. After a long dormant period, the house was reborn in the 1990s-2000s and radically reinvented itself under the impetus of Nicolas Ghesquière, then Demna Gvasalia from 2015. Demna imposed a provocative and deconstructivist vision that blended couture heritage with the codes of streetwear, internet culture, and hyperreality — making Balenciaga one of the most influential and talked-about houses in contemporary fashion.
