History

Founded in 1856 by Thomas Burberry in Basingstoke, England, the house first established itself as a specialist in protective clothing against bad weather – Thomas Burberry invented gabardine, a waterproof and breathable fabric that would equip polar explorers and soldiers of the First World War. The famous checkered pattern – the Burberry Check – was born in the 1920s as the inner lining of the iconic trench coat. Originally discreet, in the 1970s it became the visible signature of the house when it expanded to accessories, particularly the cashmere scarf – which would become one of the most recognizable and coveted products in the world. The Vintage Check, with its camel, black, white, and red tones, is today considered one of the most iconic patterns in the history of British fashion – a symbol of classic elegance that has spanned decades without ever aging.
