Loewe vintage black velvet and leather handbag — rigid architectural structure, handwritten "Loewe 1846" marquise, circa 1960–1970, Madrid. An archival bag from the house of Loewe (Madrid, founded in 1846), official purveyor to the Spanish Crown. Deep black velvet on the body, smooth leather on the edges and rigid handles, signature architectural structure. Period gold clasp. Inner marquise "Loewe 1846" in handwritten letters — certified authenticity.

History

Founded in 1846 in Madrid, Loewe is one of the oldest luxury leather goods houses in the world. Originally a collective workshop of master leather craftsmen, the house took its name in 1872 when German craftsman Enrique Loewe Roessberg joined and gave it its identity. Appointed official supplier to the Spanish Crown in 1905, Loewe quickly established itself as the ultimate symbol of Iberian luxury. This bag embodies Loewe in its artisanal golden age: the 1960s-1970s, a period when the house asserted its international expansion while maintaining entirely manual production in Madrid, long before the era of massive monogrammed logos. The interior "Loewe 1846" handwritten marquise, the rigid architectural structure, and the clean lines bear witness to a mid-century savoir-faire that is unobtainable today – a true archival piece for connoisseurs.

Period & Origin

Circa 1960-1970 – Spain (Madrid, Loewe S.A.) Several clues allow us to accurately date this piece: the inner "Loewe 1846" marquise in handwritten script, the typographic style of the label, and the rigid architectural structure are characteristic of the Madrid-based production of the house during the mid-century period. This era corresponds to Loewe's international expansion, long before the introduction of monogrammed logos and the arrival of Karl Lagerfeld's creative direction in the 1970s. Entirely handmade in Madrid in the house's historic workshops, using materials selected according to the standards of Spanish haute maroquinerie of the time.

Status

Very good condition for an archival piece over 50 years old. The black velvet is intact and retains all its luster, the leather has been delicately revived and shows no scuffs or cracks. The interior is clean and in good condition. Please note: slight marks of natural oxidation on the golden hardware of the handles—an authentic and inevitable patina on a piece from this era, which testifies to its history without affecting its solidity or elegance. These marks are part of the charm of a true vintage piece.
